I have found that black gum, cottonwood, sycamore and elm make better bump boards for tops of dump trucks. They hold up better to being hit, are cheaper to produce, and rot is not really an issue because most are torn up before they can rot. We always used 3/4" plywood on the bed sides and seemed to work pretty well. It would eventually wear out and need to be replaced but it would last a pretty good while in trucks hauling big rock daily.
